Indonesia’s Heavy Equipment Industry Soars, Captures 40 Percent of ASEAN Market

Despite facing geopolitical challenges and global trade wars, Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry continues to show positive growth. The construction equipment market is rapidly expanding, with projections reaching 25,430 units by 2030.

This momentum is driven by infrastructure, energy, electricity, urbanization, and mining sectors that keep growing.

Indonesia’s Heavy Equipment Industry Experiences Rapid Growth

Indonesia is increasingly seen as a promising market by the global construction equipment industry. This was evident at the 2025 T50 Summit Asian Forum held in Jakarta, coinciding with the Mining Indonesia exhibition.

The forum is recognized as one of the world’s key barometers for heavy equipment, construction, and mining industries. In his speech, Secretary-General of the T50 Summit Asian Forum, Zhack Chang, emphasized that Indonesia has become a major driver of the construction and mining machinery industries.

Chang also compared Indonesia’s market conditions with China’s two decades ago. According to him, Indonesia must understand market cycle patterns, much like China’s machinery industry, which experienced significant ups and downs.

He noted that the first cycle occurred during rapid growth between 2007–2011, followed by a sharp decline from 2012–2016. The second cycle took place from 2017–2021 with a surge in demand, before slowing again due to the pandemic starting in 2022.

Indonesia’s Heavy Equipment Industry Shines as a Sign of Revival

Indonesia’s construction market value once reached USD 25 billion in 2020 but dropped to USD 19.96 billion in 2024. However, the mining sector surged sharply. It hit USD 141 billion in 2024 with an average annual growth of 5.2 percent and is projected to reach USD 200 billion within the next five years.

“Key commodities such as coal and nickel remain the main drivers. Both will continue to play a strategic role in supporting the national economy,” said PERTAABI Regional Chairman, Deni Rafli.

In addition, President Prabowo’s priority programs, including food self-sufficiency with a target of 2 million hectares of food estate land, have boosted demand for heavy equipment. Global data also recorded the total revenue of the world’s top 50 mining machinery producers in 2024 at USD 76.655 million, although down 4 percent from the previous year.

Future of Indonesia’s Construction Industry
The revival of Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry aligns with the broader growth of the construction sector. Increasing infrastructure needs are driving the industry to adapt to global trends.

Digitalization, eco-friendly materials, and technology-based project management are now part of the transformation. The government plays an active role through policies encouraging innovation, workforce competency development, and higher safety and sustainability standards.

Programs for industrial zones, mass transportation, and smart cities also provide significant opportunities for the construction industry to expand.
