Sworn Translators in Indonesia – Globalization has dramatically transformed how countries interact and collaborate. With the increase in cross-border activities, ranging from exports and imports to business, investments, and research collaborations, there is a growing demand for valid official documents across various nations. These international partnerships require a seamless documentation process to ensure that any transferred information is recognized and accepted by the destination country without any barriers. In this context, the role of professional sworn translators becomes crucial.
In Indonesia, sworn translators play a key role in ensuring the legal validity of translated documents. These translators have taken an oath by the state and undergone a rigorous certification process that includes competency exams. The translations provided by sworn translators are recognized not only domestically but also by international institutions. This makes them the go-to choice for a wide range of clients, from individuals to corporations, needing official documents that are valid across countries.
The demand for sworn translators in Indonesia continues to rise. As of June 2024, a total of 51 sworn translators were officially sworn in by the Director General of the General Law Administration (Dirjen AHU) at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham), Cahyo Rahadian Muzhar.
“This year, there are now 123 sworn translators across various language pairs who have successfully taken their oath to carry out their profession of translating legal documents amid the growing cross-border relations,” Cahyo remarked during the ceremony in Jakarta on June 6, 2024.
What Is a Sworn Translator?
According to the Regulation of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Permenkumham) No. 4 of 2019, a sworn translator is someone with expertise in producing translations and who has taken an oath administered by the minister responsible for legal and human rights affairs. They are officially registered with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

“Sworn translators are vital for people using documents from both within and outside the country. Their translations are legally recognized in the country of the language being translated,” explained Dr. Ilham Djaya, Head of the South Sumatra Regional Office of Kemenkumham.
Sworn translators are required for translating at least 66 types of public documents. This requirement was further reinforced with the launch of the Apostille service by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights’ General Law Administration in June 2022.
Sworn translators differ from regular translators. While the latter may simply provide translations without certification, the work of sworn translators holds legal weight. Their translations are equivalent to the original documents, making them legally valid.
The Importance of Sworn Translator in Indonesia
Sworn translators are essential for translating international agreements, which are vital instruments for executing global cooperation. This includes legal cooperation, diplomatic relations, and business dealings, such as requests for international judicial assistance, letters of rogatory, formal extradition requests, and Apostille legalization documents.
“The legal recognition of translations done by sworn translators is fundamental in international cooperation,” Cahyo emphasized.
In Indonesia, sworn translators are indispensable for meeting legal standards and document validity across various sectors. They not only support legal processes for foreign nationals wishing to do business or settle in Indonesia, but also for local companies looking to collaborate with foreign partners.

Since their certifications are issued by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights or authorized courts, sworn translators are qualified to accurately translate important documents with legal legitimacy. Without their certification, translations from regular translators may not be accepted by government institutions or international organizations, as they lack the necessary legal status.
Thus, using a sworn translator is critical to ensuring that documents are accepted without administrative obstacles.
